The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will build a $61 million interchange to enhance safety, reduce congestion and improve travel times along a key transportation corridor south of Phoenix. Currently in final design, construction is anticipated to begin in 2026.
In the final design phase, ADOT opted for a tight diamond configuration for the upcoming interchange over Riggs Road. The interchange will separate traffic along the road and State Route 347, enhancing regional mobility.
The grade separation will focus on building a bridge over Riggs Road, creating an underpass enabling the free flow of traffic. SR 347 will be elevated to create the bridge underpass. ADOT will shift SR 347 east and Riggs Road south to accommodate the new configuration, ensuring the project won’t impact an electrical substation integral to a local Native American community.
Currently, SR 347 has two lanes traveling in both directions. The project accommodates future plans to expand the road by an additional lane. Riggs Road will also have two lanes in each direction, with plans to build left- and right-turn lanes to provide on- and off-ramp access to SR 347.
The project will incorporate additional traffic signals along Riggs Road and build retaining walls to support roadway infrastructure. ADOT will elevate existing power lines and create a driveway along Riggs Road connected to the substation.
