Throughout the country, government entities are realizing substantial savings.

  • In Bastrop, bids for building a new city hall and convention center came in at $7.8 million, approximately $1 million less than the estimated project budget.
  • The Mansfield school district's final cost for a new high school came in $24 million under budget.
  • Hays County’s bid for a new 232,000-square-foot county office building came in more than $6 million lower than an anticipated price tag of more than $58 million.
  • In Seattle, Washington, bids for replacing a viaduct that includes an interchange to connect two sports stadiums resulted in a $40 million savings.
  • In Ohio, a remake of Dayton International Airport's terminal lobby brought bids that ranged from $14 million to $15.6 million, well below the city’s estimated $20.7 million.

In Texas, hundreds of construction projects are made possible by bond elections. On May 8, more than 80 bond packages totaling $2.3 billion will be decided by Texas voters. A sampling includes:

  • A school district in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will ask voters to approve $34 million to build two new schools, renovate three campuses and add security measures throughout the district.
  • A city in North Texas will ask voters to approve $66 million for street, drainage and park projects along with other initiatives.
  • In Central Texas, one school district's $44 million bond election includes $10 million in technology upgrades while another proposes a $535 million bond that includes 300 new classrooms and a multitude of renovations.
  • A $22.85 million bond election is being held in a West Texas hospital district to build a new hospital facility.
  • A $20 million school bond issue in North Texas would provide for a second gym and a new band hall.

All 80+ bond packages include hundreds of contracting opportunities for all types of firms. SPI's researchers are following the bond issues and have compiled them into The Texas Bond Data Package. It includes project information about each of the bond initiatives and will also include election results. For more information and to get your copy, click here.
